About Reflective targets

Reflective targets are used in surveying to measure distances. Reflective targets are designated objects that reflect light or radar energy, such as metal targets or painted targets placed in certain locations for use in surveying and mapping. Reflective targets are used to measure distances in surveying. They reflect light or energy to survey instruments like Total Stations or EDMs for measurement. The accuracy and distance of the measurement is based on the quality of the target's reflectivity. Reflective targets are commonly used in engineering, surveying, construction, GIS, and mapping applications.

Reflective targets can be constructed in a variety of ways depending on the type of material used. Metal targets are often used since they provide the best reflective capability. These metal targets can be coated with survey paint such as Polythene-Acrylic to increase their reflective capability. Painted targets are also common in surveying, usually formed from bright paints like Pollydar, providing excellent reflectivity and durability.

For surveying projects, reflective targets need to be placed at certain exact locations to ensure accuracy. In most surveying applications, measuring rods or ranging bars are used to set up and measure the location of the reflective target. For precision surveying, total stations or EDMs are connected to survey control points established with reflector posts to precisely measure the distance of a reflective target. The accuracy of the measurement is based on the quality and reflective capability of the target.

When measuring distances with reflective targets, light or radio energy reflected from the target must be used by the survey instrument in order to obtain accurate results. Surveying instruments require calibration to ensure they are measuring the correct amount of reflective energy. This can be done by using certified reflective targets and taking measurements known as backsights.

Using reflective targets enables surveyors to measure distances quickly and precisely. For many surveying applications, reflective targets provide the most accurate and cost effective way to measure distances. As such, reflective targets are essential components in surveying, making them essential for any surveying project.
